Outdoor Education with Kinsale College

Kinsale College enjoys an enviable location in the fishing and tourist village of Kinsale, 25km from Cork City. The location is known nationally and internationally for its restaurants, markets and outdoor pursuits.

The location has influenced the growth and development of some the college’s cornerstone courses – Outdoor Recreation, Sustainable Horticulture (Permaculture), and Professional Cookery.

The Outdoor Recreation course offered by Kinsale College was established in 1987 and is now recognised as the primary training opportunity for people interested in outdoor and adventure education. The intensive two-year course is based in the college campus in Kinsale, utilising the extensive resources and equipment available ashore and afloat.

Former students who have successfully completed the course are now employed in sailing schools, activity centres and other outdoor education centres in Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Mediterranean.

Apart from practical training, the course emphasises the educational possibilities of the outdoors through experiential education and place based learning.

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the opportunity to explore and develop new skills in the outdoor environment. The first year programme is specifically designed to build proficiency in all areas and to facilitate the personal development of each student. The strong emphasis on practical skills and work placement combined with individualized goal setting fosters a positive environment for success and enables each student to gain the skills and confidence necessary to become an Outdoor Education Instructor.

The second year of the programme is designed to strengthen proficiency in all areas, to teach specific instructional and coaching techniques, and to develop outdoor leadership skills. Successful participants gain FETAC Level 5 qualifications and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Instructor Courses recoginised by the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) for each activity.

SAILING
All participants are coached to develop his or her personal sailing skills from complete beginner to instructor level and beyond. Practical and theoretical sessions enable the student to obtain skills in basic and advanced boat handling, navigation, sea safety, weather forecasting and passage planning. The College is recognised by the Irish Sailing Association (ISA), the NGB for sailing and boating in Ireland.

WINDSURFING
The Kinsale College of Further Education is at the forefront of Windsurfing training in Ireland. It was one of the first colleges in the country to implement the new ISA “Get up and Go” windsurfing scheme. The course caters for both those who wish to develop personal proficiency and also those who wish to gain instructor qualifications.

KAYAKING
The Kayaking programme allows students to gain the experience and skills necessary to become Kayaking Instructors. The main focus of the programme is to develop moving water skills, advanced river running, rescue abilities and safty awareness. In addition to white water kayaking and open boat canoeing, Qualifications are issued by the Irish Canoe Union (ICU).

ROCK CLIMBING
The focus of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to master the skills required to lead climb in some of Ireland’s top climbing locations. By the end of the course, the student will be able to teach people how to competently and safely climb the rock face at single pitch level. Qualifications are issued by the Mountaineering Council of Ireland (MCI).

POWER BOATING
The aim of this course is to develop students’ seamanship and knowledge in becoming proficient in handling rescue craft in all situations.
This qualification which is issued by the ISA is required for anyone working on the water.
