The Institute of Massage & Sports Therapy was established in 1998 by Rachel McCarthy, to provide a professional center of training for complementary and sports therapists.

The IMST prides itself on its successful history in the sports therapy field, with many graduates working in this popular and growing industry. Until recently this industry was unregulated, with the majority of practitioners being unqualified. It was all too often, that injuries were treated poorly and in many cases made more serious with incorrect treatment and rehabilitation advice.

Thankfully, teams and sports clubs are now recognising the need for fully trained and qualified sports therapists, who have the ability and skill to treat the injured area in a confident, safe and effective manner. The comprehensive syllabus covered on the sports injury course allows graduates to perform this and also gives them a good understanding of correct training methods, injury prevention and sports nutrition, allowing them to offer all-round advice to their athletes.

Some popular gymclasses on offer in gyms and health clubs in Ireland

To lose weight, gain muscle tone, get fit, what is the best way to do one or all of he above? What are the most popular fitness classes in Ireland today?..

Boxercise
For anyone that likes to be aggressive competitive and energetic about their exercise. It focuses on upper body conditioning, working the arms, abs, chest and shoulders. It also includes some lower body exercises in the kick boxing area and increases your fitness levels. The classes are done in time to popular music songs and include work with pads and speedballs, along with circuit training and skipping.

Body pump
Body Pump is a mixture of aerobic exercise and weights.
It results in better posture, reduces body fat and increases muscle tone and definition without the bulk.
Most of the exercises are based around weights ranging from 1kg to 5kgs and a Step routine.
All the major muscle groups are worked out, from the warm up through legs, chest, back, triceps, shoulders and abdominals, before the stretch and cool down.

Skipping
Skipping is a simple aerobic exercise where a person repeatedly jumps over a rope. Its listed here in my favorites because studies have shown that 10 minutes of skipping can have the same health benefits as a 30 minute run. And you don’t even have to leave your house.

Spinning
The instructor usually picks two teams and these try to motivate each other to keep going. Participants sit on exercise bike, following the instructions of the trainer. There is a lever on the handlebars of the bikeswhich adjust the tension of the wheels. When you are told to push the gear up it feels like you are riding up a hill. When you gear down it feels like you are going downhill.

Yoga
Yoga is a way of exercising which helps you to control your body and mind. It helps you to improve and focus the alignment of your body. It can also develop the coordination of your breathing and movement as well as teaching how to hold posture and flow from one posture to another. There are many styles of yoga, but basically they all have the same aim. The founders of the three major styles – Astanga, Iyengar and Viniyoga – were all students at the Yoga Institute at the Mysore Palace in India.

Circuit Training
Circuit training is a group of six to ten exercises that are completed one after another.
Each exercise is performed for a specified number of repetitions or for a set time period before having a quick rest and moving on to the next exercise. It can involve press-ups, sit-ups, bench dips, skipping, shuttle runs, squat thrusts, aerobics, burpees and step ups. The whole point of circuits is to give you an all body workout.

Other Classes
Classes come under different categories e.g.
Some style of step: Step Brasil style,
Some style of dance: Zumba, Samba,
Cardio: kick box, Khai Bo
Sculpt:Tone Zone, Bums Tums and Tone
Abs-: Ab Attack, Abs blast

Check out www.gymclasses.ie for more details about gymclasses in your area. Gym classes and fitness classes in all areas of Ireland.
